Centre to replicate AP model to check Maoists : Shivraj Patil

HYDERABAD : Union home minister Shivraj V Patil appreciated the effective steps taken by the Andhra Pradesh Government to check Maoists and said that the Centre was keen that the AP model be replicated in other naxalite-affected states.

Speaking to mediapersons after reviewing a parade to mark the 60th anniversary celebrations of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (NPA) here on Thursday, he said Maoist-related incidents had come down by 60 to 70 per cent in Andhra Pradesh.

He said that the Centre would sanction Rs 500 crore for naxal-affected states like Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Orissa for infrastructure development economic development programmes to wean away youth from naxalism in such States.

These governments were also asked to spend the amount to strengthen police forces and modernise equipment. The Home Minister said efforts were being made to increase the strength of Central and para-military forces to check naxalite activities across the country.
