Accused recounts how he carried out blast in city

HYDERABAD: A team of Mumbai police brought one of the three main accused in last year’s twin blasts, Anique Ahmed Sayed, to Hyderabad on Tuesday and quietly re-constructed the scene of offence.

According to police sources, the entire exercise was kept under wraps and precautions taken to block any leaking of information about the on-the-field investigation for security reasons. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Hyderabad city police that is probing into the twin blasts case extended support to the Mumbai police team.

Anique, who was captured by 19 other reported operatives of the dreaded terrorist group, Indian Mujahideen, about two weeks ago has said in his confession to the police that he planted a bomb at Lumbini Park when the laser show was on. This he did after staying in Hyderabad with another accused Akbar Ismael Choudhry for a month.

The sources said Anique was flown into the city early Tuesday morning and taken back to Mumbai in the evening after he gave details of his role. During the tour of the city, Anique identified the three places where he, Akbar and IM founder Riyaz Bhatkal planted bombs on August 25, 2007. Akbar also led the police team to Banjara Nilayam Apartments at Habsiguda, Street No. 8, where he had stayed with Akbar. Later he took the police to the computer institute at Ameerpet where he and Akbar had taken admission.

Anique has reportedly told investigators earlier that his associate, Akbar, planted an Improvised Explosive Device at Dilsuknagar foot-over-bridge which did not explode due to technical problems. He also revealed that it was Riyaz Bhatkal who had placed the bomb at Gokul Chat Bhandar. While Akbar is in Mumbai police custody, Riyaz Bhatkal is still on the run.

The sources said that both the Mumbai Police and SIT teams were at ease as Anique helped in the reconstruction of the terrorist operation and provided necessary information without putting up any resistance.

They said that SIT was planning to bring Anique to Hyderabad one more time along with his associate Akbar on Prisoner’s Transit Warrant once their one-month custody period with the Mumbai police comes to an end.
