‘Midnight” Mass special time for many

This nativity scene, just one of the many decorations in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, is a reminder of what Christmas really means ” celebrating the birth of Christ.

Although it’s the second most important time of year for Christians — Easter being the first — St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church is pulling out all the stops for its Christmas Masses.

On any given weekend, the church puts on three services — one Saturday, 5 p.m., and two on Sunday, 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. — all with the same readings and music, but for Christmas, the church adds one late night service at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve — often referred to as “midnight Mass” — and makes sure each of its four gatherings (5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Thursday) are unique.

“All four are different Masses … all the readings are different, all the prayers are different,” said the Rev. Denny Stilwell. “All four are distinct and separate Masses celebrating the feast of Christ.”

Stilwell said the Christmas vigil Mass at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve is the most preferred by families.
