The first step of the drive is to find bone marrow matches for those in need.

Canine Bone Marrow Transplant

Canine lymphoma is one of the most common types of cancer in dogs. While the survival rate with current treatments is extremely low (about 0 to 2 percent) the cure rate for dogs that have received a bone marrow transplant is at least 30 percent.

However, pending a lawsuit currently being filed, bone marrow donation may soon become profitable for donors.

Bone marrow contains unspecialized cells that are capable of turning into any type of blood cell in the body. These are termed hematopoietic stem cells and can be very beneficial for people with certain blood diseases such as leukemia. Those for the idea of small donations for donors posit that it will attract more donors and reduce the rate of donors dropping out at the last minute.
